Inpatient case files, 1856-1930 (bulk 1890-1930).

Boston State Hospital and its predecessors were responsible for providing residential care and treatment for mentally ill persons in the Boston metropolitan area from 1839 to 1981. Inpatient case files were created to provide a record of the commitment, diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients admitted to the hospital. Files contain some or all of the following: admission record; record (or abstract) of previous commitments; records of physical and mental examinations; social service and after-care reports; clinical and medical records and charts; chronological notes on patient's condition; autopsy report; death certificate; mortuary report; visitor records; receipts for valuables; accident and injury reports; correspondence with interested parties concerning patient; and photographs. Information includes name; registration no.; dates of admission and discharge, transfer, or death; wards where confined; personal and family history. Case files for later years contain more detailed information relating to patient's medical and psychological condition.

Chapter 131 of the Acts of 1839 established the Boston Lunatic Hospital in the City of Boston.
